Barcelona and Spa to rotate on F1 calendar from 2027

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has agreed a new Formula 1 contract extension that will see it rotate on the calendar with Spa-Francorchamps over the next six years.
This year’s race in June was the last of its current deal, and the future of the venue had been in doubt after Madrid secured a spot to become the home of the Spanish Grand Prix.
But following months of negotiations, F1 has now agreed terms for it to share a place on the calendar with the Belgian Grand Prix in the future.
With both venues holding a race this year, next season, Barcelona will drop off before returning in 2028.
The rotation deal means Spa holds races in 2027, 2029 and 2031, with Barcelona events taking place in 2028, 2030 and 2032.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said that, off the back of the huge crowds Barcelona attracts, allied to recent investment to improvement facilities, it made sense to keep it on the F1 schedule.
“I am delighted that we will continue to race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for years to come,” he said. “The team have invested heavily in the circuit and hosted fantastic fan festivals in recent years.
“We look forward to seeing how they continue to develop the experience, both for attendees at the race and for the city as a whole.”
Barcelona’s hopes of taking the shared slot with Spa were eased by Dutch GP organisers announcing that this year’s races will be its final one at Zandvoort.
It also helps open up a potential new slot in the calendar for Thailand, which has been a frontrunner to host its first F1 race, potentially from 2028.
