Why Aldeguer is back so soon after 'ugly' crash and injury

MotoGP's return to the Brazilian Grand Prix is set to feature a surprise participant in Fermin Aldeguer, back much earlier than had been feared when he suffered a training crash in January.

Aldeguer fractured his femur while riding a Ducati Panigale near Valencia in the off-season, forcing an absence from pre-season testing and the Thai Grand Prix opener.

His spell on the sidelines looked likely to stretch further than that, but Aldeguer's return has played out ahead of schedule, with a recent test on the Panigale paving the way for him to come to Goiania to ride the MotoGP bike - which has been OK'd by the medical staff.

"The accident - I don't know in what moment I broke my leg, but, yes, I remember well the accident," he recounted in his first media session back.

"I was braking and when I shifted one gear, I lost the rear tyre and I did a highside. Ugly, ugly, but we are here in Brazil. This is the good news."

It was, he confirmed, an earlier return than expected also for him.

"In the end with how the bone was and how I broke it, we expected more or less [to be back for the] Qatar race, but after three-four weeks I started to think of arriving here in Brazil.”

The Qatar race was originally slated to take place on April 12 - almost a full month from now. It has been pushed back to November due to the war in the Middle East, something Aldeguer said hadn't come into his thinking in terms of the return.

"At the end, we knew that Qatar would be postponed some days ago - and I had put the goal to arrive here some weeks ago. For sure, this news, that Qatar is postponed, helps me to have more weeks to continue with my recovery, to continue training and try to recover, to arrive in Jerez [for the Spanish Grand Prix at the end of April] at 100%."

For now, he is nowhere near that, as evidenced by him needing a crutch to move around the paddock. "I’m better on the bike than when I walk. And this is positive," Aldeguer insisted.

And he hasn't ruled out chasing a result.

"At the end it’s a good opportunity because it’s a new track for all riders. We don’t have the base of the race or of the test, but I think it’s a good opportunity, to take with calm and enjoy that I’m here.

"This race for me is a test but for sure I want to start in the best way possible. If it's possible to be inside the top 10 and fighting for more, for sure better.”
