Puig to step down as Honda MotoGP team boss

Honda's factory MotoGP team has announced that team boss Alberto Puig will step down at the end of the 2026 season.

Puig, who had held the role since 2018, will instead take up what Honda describes as a "key advisory role" for its racing operation.

The move comes against the backdrop of reporting that current Trackhouse Aprilia boss Davide Brivio would be joining in a management and consulting role (though not as team boss).

Puig's change of role was announced on Thursday ahead of the Catalan Grand Prix at Barcelona.

"Honda Racing Corporation will continue to utilise Alberto Puig's four decades of grand prix racing experience," the team wrote, "as the 59-year-old Barcelona native transitions to a new role within Honda HRC.

"The new role will see Puig continue to assist Honda HRC management and staff with a number of tasks across all of Honda's two-wheeled racing activities.

"As HRC advisor, Puig will continue to help shape HRC's youth development programmes while simultaneously bolstering Honda's efforts in the MotoGP and WorldSBK championships by supporting management staff and riders by assessing the overall picture of Honda HRC's two-wheeled activities."

"It's been a life of leading from the front and now I feel my skills are best suited to look at the overall picture," Puig was quoted as saying in the press release.

A new team boss, yet to be announced, will now take Honda and its factory team into the next regulations cycle, in which the team is expected to field Fabio Quartararo and rookie David Alonso as its riders.
