Antonelli wins Canadian GP after another fraught fight and Russell DNF

George Russell retired from the Formula 1's 2026 Canadian Grand Prix and ensured a fourth straight victory for Kimi Antonelli, while Mercedes' closest pace threat McLaren endured a torrid day.
After earlier rain, McLaren chose to start the race on intermediates, but the track had virtually dried and further rain stayed away, forcing Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to pit for slicks soon after the start. Piastri would end up 11th after receiving a penalty for taking out Alex Albon, and Norris was out of the race with a reliability issue.
Meanwhile, Antonelli and Russell engaged in repeated wheel-to-wheel battles before Russell was forced to retire with a power unit issue.
Lewis Hamilton overtook Max Verstappen for second place late on. Split by half a second, the Ferrari driver and Red Bull driver shared the podium for the first time since the 2024 British GP.
The Antonelli-Russell battle continues
Antonelli lost the lead to Norris at the start but regained it when the McLaren pitted, leading to a Mercedes duel that tested the team's rules of engagement.
Russell attempted to pass Antonelli at the start of lap three but backed out. He made a concrete bid for the place at the end of lap six, passing Antonelli at the back straight. Antonelli locked up in avoidance and went straight on.
The back-and-forth continued at the end of lap 12 of 68 when Russell locked up and Antonelli caught up, but backed out of a move.
On lap 17, Russell locked up at the hairpin. The Mercedes were alongside into the final braking zone but Russell hung on and Antonelli realised that he had to back out.
Four laps later, Antonelli closed in again but Russell defended well. As the Mercedes met backmarkers at the end of the next lap, Russell locked up at the hairpin once again and Antonelli passed him on the back straight.
Antonelli locked up at the hairpin on lap 24 and now Russell was ahead, but not by much. The pair were wheel-to-wheel - Pirelli paint rubbing off - into the final chicane and Antonelli was forced over the grass and rejoined in front.
Antonelli argued against giving the place back: “Why mate?! He pushed me off, and I was ahead! What's the point?” But he relented.
Mercedes then stepped in.
“So we've got to tidy up this racing. We need to keep it clean. So if we can't keep it tidy then we'll have to stop you racing. Message to both cars,” engineer Pete Bonington told Antonelli, while Russell was delivered a similar message from Marcus Dudley.
Russell was struggling to stay ahead, however, and Antonelli continued to give chase.
Then on lap 30, Russell went over the grass at Turn 8 and stopped just after the chicane, visibly furious. A power unit issue ended his race.
To add insult to injury, Russell was noted by the stewards for throwing his headrest out of the car.
Antonelli went on to win by 10.7 seconds over Hamilton.
McLaren's disastrous race
The indecisive rainclouds meant there was no consensus on the tyre compounds.
The McLarens opted for intermediates from the second row (as did the Audis, Carlos Sainz of Williams, and the Cadillacs). The Racing Bulls and Alpines opted for mediums - and the rest opted for softs.
Arvid Lindblad's Racing Bulls was stationary on the grid, which led to one aborted start, and then another.
Meanwhile, Piastri made his case for a swap to slick tyres to no avail.
When the lights finally went out, Piastri dropped to fifth while Norris shot into the lead. They pitted at the end of lap one and two, respectively, and went on to lose three seconds a lap to the leading Mercedes.
It was all deemed somewhat arbitrary as Piastri locked up at Turn 12 and t-boned Albon out of the race for a 10-second penalty that was served during the second VSC of the race (for debris) on lap 53.
Norris was told he had a possible reliability issue and continued until lap 42 before stopping in the Turn 1 runoff, while Piastri finished a distant 11th.
Verstappen vs Hamilton and Hadjar's day to forget
Verstappen was rapid early in the race, overtaking Hamilton with a late-braking move at the start of lap nine.
The Red Bull struggled for pace and tyre temperature as the race went on and, when the second VSC ended, Verstappen was under a second ahead of Hamilton.
Hamilton passed Verstappen at the opening sequence on lap 62 but couldn't consolidate second place. Verstappen didn't relent and was within half a second of the Ferrari as the race reached its final lap, but couldn't overtake his rival.
Charles Leclerc settled for fourth. When the first VSC was deployed, he was past the pit entry, and Ferrari was therefore forced to double-stack its drivers.
Leclerc then found himself in a dicey battle for fourth with Isack Hadjar, who moved much too late and multiple times in defence. Hadjar eventually lost fourth to Leclerc but was given a 10-second time penalty for his troubles. After serving that, he was given a stop-go penalty for a yellow flag infringement.
Despite making an error after emerging from the pitlane during the VSC, Franco Colapinto capitalised for sixth place ahead of Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson.
Pierre Gasly lost out in an early bout against Ollie Bearman and Fernando Alonso but recovered to eighth. The Alpine driver was on Lawson's tail late in the race but missed out on seventh by three tenths of a second.
Sainz finished a lonely ninth despite starting on intermediates and Bearman completed the top 10 for Haas.
Sergio Perez joined the other retirees as his Cadillac's suspension broke on lap 43.
Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso made up nine places on the opening lap but retired late on with the team citing a problem with his seat.
