Success all round for WSR at Oulton Park
Charles Rainford triumphed for a second straight Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship weekend with a dominant drive in the Oulton Park (6/7 June) finale as WSR’s excellent recent form continued amid mixed weather conditions in Cheshire.
And with team-mate Daryl De Leon scoring his first career independent class victory in Race 2, it was a double celebration for the 18-time series champions and their pair of BMW 330i M Sport race cars.
Having been drawn third on Race 3’s partially-reversed grid, Rainford moved into second place at the start and anticipated the track conditions better than anybody else to seize the lead at one-third distance following a safety-car restart.
The #99 controlled his pace thereafter to win for a second weekend in a row and for the third time in his BTCC career. It was also a record-extending 139th series victory for WSR.
The Horsham racer was 15th and ninth in the day’s other races to sit fourth in the overall standings and third in the Independent’s category, which he also won in Race 3.
Team-mate De Leon holds second in the Independents’ standings, only five points from the top spot, following an impressive category victory in the second bout of the day, coming in fourth spot overall after he carved his way through the order from 10th on the grid.
The Anglo-Filipino’s first category win helped WSR to climb to second in the Independent Teams’ standings, one point from the top spot, and to cement their second place in the overall Teams’ rankings.
De Leon had also made good progress in the opening contest; the common thread being that he had chosen, unlike Charles, to use the soft-option Goodyear tyres rather than getting his mandatory hard-tyre use out of the way early on.
The #2's results across the early part of the afternoon elevated him to a career-best fifth place in the Drivers’ Championship, though his 15th spot in Race 3, on the hard tyres, caused him to end the day sixth in the standings.
The BTCC now takes its summer break before resuming at the end of July (25/26) at the fastest circuit on the calendar, Thruxton.
Charles Rainford: “We said after Saturday that Race 3 was ours, and we’ve only gone and won it! Just amazing. To get a win at Snetterton and now at Oulton Park too is just brilliant. That was probably the fastest race I’ve ever driven. It was qualifying laps from start to end – with two safety-car periods in between – and I’m super, super happy. I’m so thankful to my sponsors and the amazing WSR team. We have a break now for a bit, but we’ll be making sure we’re pushing just as hard once we get there.”
Daryl De Leon: “We’re walking away with a nice Independent winning trophy, which is brilliant. I was pipped on the line for tenth in Race 1, but I had a really good drive in Race 2 to come from tenth on the grid to finish fourth. I could have been a little higher, but I took too long to get through the pack. I’m very happy to have the Independent win. In the last race, on the less grippy, hard tyre, and with only four laps of boost, we were nowhere, but I’m happy with the weekend overall and it’s nice to see there’s some good pace in the BMW. I’m still there or thereabouts in sixth in the points and that’s thanks to a strong performance by the whole team. Bring on Thruxton.”
Dick Bennetts, Team Principal: “It’s been a very good day, especially when you consider we started the first race well outside the top ten. Charles was on the right tyre in Race 3, but made the most of it, and Daryl’s performance in Race 2 was very impressive. As pleased as I am for both drivers, I’m even more pleased for the team members that build and run the cars because we’ve had another weekend with excellent reliability and that’s helped us into strong positions in the various championship tables. We have a bit of a gap now before the next round, but that will give us time to make sure the BMWs are in the best shape possible for Thruxton.”
