McLaren will introduce a modified version of its flip-over rear wing at Formula 1's Hungarian Grand Prix, but it doesn't plan to race it until at least September.

McLaren brought its own version of the flip-over rear wings popularised by Ferrari and Red Bull to the Austrian GP at the end of June to test, but it had to abandon that plan, and it never left the garage. 

The team has since made modifications and will now attempt to debut it during first practice in Hungary - where reigning Formula 2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli will get his second F1 practice outing of the year. 

However, McLaren says "this item is not scheduled to be introduced fully at this or the following race in the Netherlands" - the first race after F1's summer break.

That would suggest the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where such a wing would be particularly useful, will be the earliest McLaren will race with it, should the tests prove successful. 

Ferrari conducted a lengthy on-track testing programme with its ‘Macarena' wing - including an eye-catching debut in Bahrain's pre-season test - before it raced with it from Miami in May. 

Italian media reports that Ferrari will have a modified version of its Macarena wing, potentially for introduction in Hungary. 

Red Bull had to park its flip-over rear wing for the Belgian GP, after back-to-back high-speed crashes for Max Verstappen in Austria and Britain, but it says it's found a fix and it will return. 

McLaren's updated flip-over wing will debut alongside a raft of upgrades, including a new floor and "further other aerodynamic parts".

That's all part of McLaren's plan to, in the words of team boss Andrea Stella, "redirect" car development from some of its original concept choices.
